Arleta was created in 1968 by a resident petition after the newly built Interstate 5 physically divided Pacoima — one of the more recent community boundary changes in the Valley's history.
Arleta was originally the western half of Pacoima. When the 5 Freeway was built through the area in the early 1960s, it created a physical divide between the neighborhood's east and west sides; residents on the west side petitioned to separate, and Arleta was officially recognized as its own community in 1968.
